Le Vice-Président de la Fédération Unie préside le Sénat et tranche les votes en cas d’égalité. Il peut assurer l’intérim présidentiel en cas d’incapacité du Président à gouverner. Il termine également le mandat d’u, président décédé, démissionnaire ou destitué.
 
Bien que second personnage de l'exécutif, la Constitution ne donne aucun rôle exécutif au vice-président. Il peut se voir attribuer des fonctions et missions par le [[Président de la Fédération-Unie|président]] mais il n'agit alors que comme un agent du président. Beaucoup de vice-présidents dans l’histoire sont donc restés sans missions exécutives pendant leur mandat.
 
En tant que vice-Président, il a la charge de présider les débats du [[Sénat (Fédération-Unie)|Sénat]] bien qu’il n’ait pas le droit d’intervenir dans les débats de ce-dernier. Cependant, il a la possibilité, en cas d'égalité de vote, de trancher le vote en apportant une voix décisive.
 
Il est le premier dans l’ordre de succession présidentielle. En cas de décès, de démission ou de destitution du Président, il doit terminer le mandat de ce-dernier. Dans l’histoire, deux vice-Présidents ont été promus à la Présidence en cours de mandat :  [[Richard Shelby]] (en l’an 37) et [[Henry Bennet]] (en 118).

Le Vice-Président est élu en binôme avec le Président, selon donc les mêmes [[Président de Fédération-Unie##Mode d’élection|modalités]].

C'est le collège électoral, formé des 156 grands électeurs (Electoral College), qui élit le président et le vice-président qui se présentent ensemble un « ticket ». Le candidat à la vice-présidence est d’ailleurs choisi par le candidat à la présidence.
 
Le ticket arrivé en tête dans un état remporte l’intégralité des grands électeurs de l’état. Un ticket remportant ensuite au moins 79 grands électeurs remporte l’élection générale et gagne la Présidence et la Vice-Présidence. Si aucun candidat à la vice-présidence ne remporte une majorité de grands électeurs, il appartient au [[Sénat (Fédération-Unie)|Sénat]] d’élire le Vice-Président.
